Homeless in South Africa
The Human Sciences Research Council estimates that there are between 100,000 and 200,000 individuals experiencing homelessness in South Africa, most of which are young adults or children. Unstable housing in this region is often due to lack of affordable housing, increasing unemployment rates, and poor social and economic policies.
One young woman was pursuing a degree in Information Science in South Africa when she was removed from her housing. Unable to turn to family for help, she was assisted by The Helpers.
The Helpers reached this young woman through Twitter. The Helpers connected with the Cold And Uncared For (CAUF) Society and recommended services in her area. Finally, she was provided with information on local homeless shelters, food assistance, and organizations which help with education and vocational services.
Higher education in South Africa is a strong predictor of employment and economic success, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). That's why it is crucial to support young adults pursuing higher education in order to ensure a more equal future.
